How often should I see a Dentist?

You may be asking yourself if a dental check-up is really necessary, especially if you take good care of your teeth and are not experiencing any present issues. While that is certainly a valid and understandable question to ask, routine dental visits can help in more ways than you might think! With that in mind, our dentists and dental professionals at Canatella Dental would be pleased to see you for a dental check-up and answer any questions you have about regular dental visits.
How often do you really need to go to the dentist?
The average recommendation for how often you should go to the dentist is once every six months. However, the reality is that some people require dental visits more often than others. As such, the average recommendation is more of a ballpark estimate than a case-by-case guide. With that in mind, a more inclusive recommendation is once per year for individuals without any dental health issues, every six months for individuals with mild to moderate dental issues, and once every three to four months for individuals with significant dental health issues.
Why is Going to the Dentist Important?
Even if you do not notice any dental issues, a dentist can detect problems before they occur or become a significant issue. As such, your dentist will not only fix or treat any present dental problems you have, but they can also prevent various dental issues with regular or routine dental visits. In this way, making routine visits to a dentist is important even if you have healthy teeth, as your dentist can make sure they stay that way! Routine dental visits can help prevent various dental issues, conditions, or illnesses, while also providing early detection of such illnesses or issues to treat them before they develop into a more significant problem.
Additional benefits of going to the dentist regularly include more intensive cleaning and whitening of your teeth. Even if you are an avid cleaner of your teeth (which we applaud!), it is unlikely that your teeth cleaning routine will be able to do all that a dental hygienist can do for your teeth at a routine dental check-up.
With that in mind, it is important to make regular visits to the dentist for both cosmetic and dental health reasons!
What happens if you don’t get your teeth cleaned?
In the most extreme cases where an individual neglects cleaning their teeth on their own and by a dental hygienist, the most common occurrence is tooth loss. However, for individuals that clean their teeth regularly on their own but neglect dental visits, tooth loss is not so common. With that being said, other issues can develop for individuals who do not have their teeth cleaned by a dental professional on a routine basis, such as the following:
- Bad breath from hardened plaque, tartar, and stains on your teeth
- Build-up of plaque and tartar
- Cavities and tooth decay
- Gum disease
- Increased risk of oral cancer or pregnancy complications
What happens if you haven’t been a dentist in years?
While you may be clear of any dental issues, you will likely have a cavity to fill or some cleaning to have done to prevent gum disease and other dental issues if you have not seen a dentist in years. As such, if you are coming to realize that you cannot remember the last time you have seen a dentist, that is an excellent time to make an appointment with one! In such cases, our dental professionals at Canatella Dental understand that life gets in the way of dental visits at times, not to mention that they are not always everyone’s cup of tea! As such, whatever the reason for your lack of dental visits over the years, we will be happy to examine your dental health and provide you with any dental cleaning or treatment you require.
