missing tooth replacement options
Whether you are missing one or more teeth because of advanced tooth decay, a serious injury or a necessary extraction, the need for missing tooth replacement cannot be overstated. Even one missing tooth can compromise your ability to speak, chew and maintain a healthy diet. Many people will also become self-conscious of their smile and avoid showing it in social situations. Thus, missing teeth can have both physical and emotional consequences. Fortunately, there are a number of missing tooth replacement options.

Dental Implants

The most natural-looking and the most structurally sound option for missing tooth replacement is a dental implant. Just like a tooth, a dental implant consists of a portion visible above the gum line and a portion not visible below the gum line. The implant is a biocompatible titanium post that is surgically implanted in your jaw. At our office, Dr. Canatella uses the ORTHOPHOS XG 3D imaging machine to gauge bone volume and to determine the precise position of an implant in order to achieve the strongest and most durable foundation. As you heal from surgery, the dental implant bonds with the surrounding bone tissue. For a single missing tooth replacement, you’ll return to the dental office where we’ll attach a custom crafted porcelain crown.

For patients missing several teeth, there are implant retained dentures. By strategically placing implants along one or both arches, Dr. Canatella can restore your smile with dentures that securely attach to the implants. You’ll not only have a more secure oral prosthetic, you’ll also avoid the sagging facial appearance that often happens to denture wearers. Dental implants stimulate healthy bone growth, which is necessary to maintaining full bone structure.

Dental Crowns and Bridges

Another reliable missing tooth replacement option is a crown and bridge. This prosthetic device uses one or two abutment crowns to securely hold a false tooth in the place of a missing tooth. The abutment crowns are fitted over healthy teeth on either side of missing teeth. In turn, these allow one or more pontics (false teeth) to “bridge” the gap of your missing teeth.
